After 1868 liberal Catholics were mostly replaced with conservative or clerical Catholics; it was only in the constituencies of Limburg that moderate liberals could gain a victory. The "lagging behind" of Limburg seems to have been a consequence of the direct influence exerted on the elections by bishop J. A. Paredis. This observation not only contradicts the way the bishop of Roermond is usually represented, but also sheds a peculiar light on the concord among the episcopacy after 1868. | ||
