The question is whether - as in the mission of the Belgian Franciscans - the brothers found themselves in a problematic position. Two aspects are discussed: relations with the regular missionaries and the way the lay brothers interpreted their work. The article is based mainly on letters from the four Dutch brothers: Bonifacius Timmer (1847-1903), Hippolytus van Schie (1902-85), Faustinus Coolen (1904-90), and Angellus van der Weide (1907-83). Timmer was active in the early years of the mission; the three others were active simultaneously in the vicariate. In the cases of Coolen, Van Schie, and Van der Weide one may speak of a successful performance. This may be attributed to the fact that the vicariate council was prepared to create conditions for the lay brothers which ensured that they could function effectively: a monastery was built for the brothers to live and work in, meaningful functions were created, and the contribution of the lay brothers to work among the Chinese was more highly appreciated.
