This is a temple that invites discussion, although it has rarely been the subject of academic research. Deonnie Moodie’s much-needed case study of Kālīghāṭ enters straight into those discussions in terms which are familiar to Kolkatans themselves, drawing on different kinds of data (fieldwork interviews, historical documents, legal case history) in order to tell a compelling story about the trajectories of Indian modernity as they have played out through a major temple’s relationship to the state and the Hindu public at large. | ||
