| 520 | |a The aim of the article is to present the results of the research about implementation and use of the Synodal principle of the management of Church administration as stipulated in the Constitution of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia (ELCL) during the period of the Soviet regime from 1948 to 1984, and why and how this principle was restricted during this period; as well as what attempts were made to extend this principle to the church management and administration. The author of the article inspects the sovietization process of the ELCL management and administration in a wider context; special attention is paid to the destruction of the synodal management; the author analyzes the legalization process of the sovietized ELCL leadership and management structures, and the Church Constitution of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic. The author describes the attempt to reform the Constitution of ELCL in 1951 and analyzes the proposed changes from the viewpoint of the Synodal principle of Church management. The author analyzes the proposed and adopted changes in the Church Constitution in 1968 from the perspective of the Synodal principle of Church management as well as the context, trends and aims of these changes. At the end of the article author focuses on the project of the Church Constitution worked out by the only organized opposition movement of pastors at the beginning of the 80s, especially paying attention to its originality and radicalism from the perspective of the Synodal principle of Church management, as well as reasons why ELCL in the 80s did not use the possibilities for the church administration to come out of stagnation and renew the inner life of the Church. | ||
