520 |a Mekhilta de Rabbi Ishmael is one of the classical rabbinic texts that has been translated into several languages and studied for centuries. This is the first time one of its chapters has been translated into Latvian. The current translation has been done from the Hebrew text reconstructed in the edition by Jacob Z. Lauterbach, Mekhilta de Rabbi Ishmael: A Critical Edition, Based on the Manuscripts and Early Traditions, with an English Translation, Introduction, and Notes (Philadelphia: The Jewish Publication Society, 2004). The article starts by discussing scholarly terminology of rabbinic literature in Latvian. The few published scholarly texts on the subject show a considerable diversity in terminology. After a short survey and analysis, the author lists suggested Latvian terms that are also used further in this article. In the hope that this translation could be used in a classroom or by anybody who would be interested in learning more about classical rabbinic literature, the article gives an introduction to Mekhilta de Rabbi Ishmael discussing its dating, authorship, division, and themes. The introduction particularly focuses on tractate Amalek, its place in the wider context of Mekhilta, and the rabbis mentioned in the tractate. The main body of the article is the Latvian translation of chapter 1 of tractate Amalek with commentary by the author. The commentaries are written to explain the Biblical context of the passages as well as to point out the rabbinic way of thinking, writing, and arguing. The translation of this chapter of Mekhilta de Rabbi Ishmael is done in the hope that a translation of other chapters will follow. Also, the author hopes that the Latvian reader will be able to identify with some of the themes discussed in this piece of classical rabbinic literature, for example, how to explain and react to somebody who one perceives as hostile towards oneself for no apparent reason.
