As religion has gained salience in both media and popular discourse, so has its influence in both national and global politics. What has been overlooked is that the United States and European countries alike, in confronting growing diversity and multiculturalism, are entangled with contemporaneous debates over culture, nation, and national identity. Secularism and the religio-cultural histories in these societies are thus critical to any discussion surrounding the emergent political trends in these states, given professed secular claims to equality under law, fairness, and neutrality on religious, non-religious, and other grounds. This paper explores the theoretical discourse to draw attention to the relationship between religion, politics, and national identity in the present era. | ||
| 520 | |a ZusammenfassungDas Zusammenspiel von Säkularismus, Religion und kultureller Identität in der gegenwärtigen Politik westlicher liberaler Demokratien wurde bisher vernachlässigt und muss stärker berücksichtigt werden. Im gleichen Maße wie die Religion sowohl in den Medien als auch im öffentlichen Diskurs an Sichtbarkeit gewonnen hat, hat auch ihr Einfluss auf die nationale und globale Politik zugenommen. Es wurde bisher dabei jedoch übersehen, dass sich die Vereinigten Staaten und die europäischen Länder gleichermaßen, wenn sie sich mit der wachsenden Vielfalt und dem Multikulturalismus auseinandersetzen, sich gleichzeitig auf Debatten über Kultur, Nation und nationale Identität einlassen. Säkularismus und die religio-kulturelle Geschichte dieser Gesellschaften sind entscheidend für die Diskussionen über die sich abzeichnenden politischen Trends in diesen Staaten, vor allem vor dem Hintergrund erklärter Säkularisierungsziele wie Rechtsgleichheit, Fairness und Neutralität. Dieses Artikel untersucht den theoretischen Diskurs, um die Aufmerksamkeit auf das Verhältnis von Religion, Politik und nationaler Identität in der Gegenwart zu lenken. | ||
