Summary: | Daniel Helminiak's A Scientific Spirituality: The Interface of Psychology and Theology is briefly examined from an interpretive social science perspective. Helminiak's article is seen as making a strong contribution to restoring a genuine ethical or spiritual dimension of human action and agency to human science inquiry, and to our search for a way beyond objectivism and relativism. Friendly criticisms are offered to the effect that Helminiak's key ethical notion of authenticity is excessively vague and needs development and that his conception of human action and practical reasoning might profitably take fuller account of our historical and cultural embeddedness. |
