Hood's thesis that introspective methods are essential is supported with the qualifications that introspection be defined as self-report methodology and that support of his view is dependent on one's theoretical orientation toward conceptualizing the development of self, the healthy self, the unhealthy self, and the roles of psychotherapy and introspection in the process of healing and transforming the self. The relevance of the soul or "soulful self" and Hood's argument for it are also discussed.
