In the process, we made an effort to see if involvement in the church varied by race and sex. Data on 13 different aspects of church participation were obtained from a nationwide survey of older Whites and older African Americans. The items assessing church involvement reflected activity in the following areas: group worship, service activities, offices and formal church roles, involvement among the homebound, and financial contributions. The findings indicate that older Blacks were more involved than older Whites in every dimension except financial contributions. The results further reveal that older women were more involved than older men in one area only: group worship activities.
