A campaign against this movement followed in Japan, and among the main accusations were that the Unification movement manipulates followers to donate excessively and creates an unhealthy environment for children. As a by-product of these campaigns, the laws on donations were amended, and in December 2022 the Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) released guidelines on how to interpret them with respect to donations made to religious organizations. At the same time, the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare issued guidelines on the “religious abuse of children.” While they are clearly aimed at hitting the Unification movement, these documents also include provisions seemingly directed against the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Evangelical Christians, and the Roman Catholic Church. | ||
