Summary: | The problem of relationship between religion and science has been discussed for centuries in the Western culture with reference to Christianity. It can also be considered with regard to the great Asian religious traditions. The paper analyses the case of Buddhism. As soon as Buddhism came to be known in Europe, especially after Eugène Burnouf published his pioneering studies in France in 1844, it underwent a sort of double test of legitimacion within the Western society: on the one hand, it was compared to Christianity, on the other, starting from the last decades of 19th century, theories and practices of this tradition were viewed in the perspective of their accordance with modern science. However, as reason and faith work in different domains of human experience, it seems pointless in today's world to look at them in permanent contrast with each other; on the contrary, they might be seen in the light of a fruitful interaction likely to produce positive results for the needs of a modern society, both in the East and in the West.
