| 520 | |a Eleven years after the discovery of the fountain dedicated to Anna Perenna, which brought to light much new information about the relationship between religion and magic in the ancient Roman world, this paper especially focuses on the cylindrical lead containers which are among the most peculiar findings from the fountain: these were not only boxes in which figurines of organic material were closed, but they were real defixiones themselves, together with the inscribed curse tablets. Was this their primary function or use? Were they made with a specific magical purpose, or they came to it just after a second utilization? Two main hypotheses are here discussed: the close parallel between the lead containers from the fountain and bronze ink containers, and the possibility that these boxes could be used to keep what was a renown panacea in the ancient world, a medical potion called Theriaca.
