Summary: | This paper consists of two parts. The first describes the current situation of Religious Education in Italy and the debate of recent decades on this issue. Following a chronological order and the historical development, it tries to present some key issues. The goal is to underline the potentialities and also the limits of the Italian situation, to evaluate the state of health of this discipline and to think about future perspectives. The second part presents various alternatives which have been effected in the last few years in some Italian high schools and which are the consequences of the debate about the option to study the phenomenon of religion rather than just one religion. In view of the cultural and religious pluralism of our society, it is undeniable that one of the most interesting questions yet to be resolved is the inadequacy of the available educational proposal not only within a scholastic context, but also at the more popular level of public debate.
