In Indo-European tradition, religious differences emerged from a social organization. According to G. Dumézil's theory, each caste had its gods and its own variety of religion. Also, some tribes, e.g. Goths, shaped their ethnic identity on the basis of myth, rituals and taboo. In totem groups, religion was defined by the clan. Each member of a given family had to follow their own customs and reject foreign religions. The price was the life of the whole community. Indo-European mythology, literary and archaeological data suggest the religious authority of the clan. Studies on the specificity of religious exclusivity in ancient traditions are possible, but they must be implemented with methodological caution.
