A partir de então, ocorreram uma série de disputas simbólicas entre os representantes do catolicismo e da Doutrina Espírita no país, sobretudo na capital, Rio de Janeiro, através dos periódicos O Apóstolo, representando a Igreja Católica, e o Reformador, representando o movimento espírita. Com o advento da República e a criminalização do espiritismo no Código Penal de 1890, os espíritas passaram a buscar legitimidade de suas práticas como sendo religiosas, também, para o Estado. Para tanto, o movimento espírita começou a alastrar-se por campos de atuação da Igreja Católica, através da ação da caridade, vislumbrando sair do caso de desordem pública defendendo o direito constitucional de liberdade de culto e de consciência. | ||

There was no intention of breaking with the Holy See. However, the Catholic Church did not accept this interpretation. From that time on, a series of symbolic disputes took place between the representatives of Catholicism and Spiritism in the country, especially at its capital, Rio de Janeiro, through the newspapers O Apóstolo, representing the Catholic Church, and the Reformador, representing the Spiritist movement. With the advent of the Republic and the criminalization of Spiritism in the Brazilian Criminal Code of 1890, spiritists began to seek legitimacy for their practices as religious also before the State. Thus, the Spiritist movement began to spread across fields of activity of the Catholic Church, through charity actions, intending to stay out of the case of public disorder by defending the constitutional right of freedom of religion and conscience. | ||
