Moreover, the tradition of the Greek Orthodox Church influence on contemporary politics and social situation of citizens is strongly underlined since the Greek revival in the 19th century. During the Ottoman domination, affiliation with the Church was one of few possibilities to manifest one's background. After 1821, clergymen adjusted their structures and proclaimed autocephaly, thus becoming practically a state Church. Membership with this Church as well as baptism according to its practices, together with jus sanguinis tradition, have been the basic elements indicating national belonging of all Greeks, also those living abroad. During many historical torments of the 19th and 20th centuries, hierarchs often commented on issues at hand and political decisions of consecutive governments. The political and economical situation in Greece in the first decade of the 21st century made their voice particularly important. The crisis, change of governments and demonstrations taking place after 2008 proved once again how important is the stand of Orthodox clergymen for the public opinion in Greece. In a country still struggling with economic and political issues, the ecclesiastic voice becomes one of the most important guidelines for electors' further decisions and, in consequence, for the fate of next governments and their relation to reforms imposed by European partners. The article presents reasons why the Greek Orthodox Church position is still contemporarily treated as distinctive, while the opinion of the most important hierarchs is valued by prominent politicians of each political parties of the Greek political arena. Moreover, the text depicts how the Church and its representatives reacted to problems occurring due to the economic crisis in Greece between 2008-2016. | ||
