The attack on the editorial office of Charlie Hebdo stands out in terms of the scale of the crime and the size of its social resonance, but can one talk about any new cultural consequences of this act? Incidents of this kind are usually accompanied by momentary uprisings, solidarity marches, and critical marathons in the media. Once emotions subside, however, with hindsight it is worth considering the state of visual culture and the contemporary iconosphere. Political correctness immediately following the attack impeded the attempts at an artistic and esthetic evaluation of the visual satire of the Charlie Hebdo type. Is every image worth dying for in the name of a higher idea of the freedom of the press? What does a similar satire look like in Arabic countries? Paradoxically, at present one can observe a radical increase in the quality of film productions made by ISIS propagandists, which accompanies the increasing cruelty of their acts of terror. | ||
