From this perspective two American theocracies are discussed: the Puritan colonies of 17th-century New England and the semi-autonomous community of Mormons in 19th-century Utah. The focus of analysis is on theology of theocracy, i.e. theological components of the legitimation formula of those theocratic political systems. The two fundamental ideas, around which these communities were organized were the idea of covenant in the case of Puritans and the doctrine of continuous revelation in the case of Mormons. The both, albeit in various ways, contributed to maintaining a coherent worldview of the believers and, thus, uphold the legitimacy and stability of the political system. | ||
