According to the critics the basic spatial code has a horizontal character. Contemporary research on astral symbolism prove that the vertical dimension is an integral part of the mythical model of the world of the Australian Aborigines. In consequence, the heavenly world was a model for the transitions occurring on Earth. Linked to it are initiation rituals which elements are being related to particular star constellations, with an emphasis on such bodies as the Milky Way, Coalsack Nebula, the Southern Cross, and the Magellanic Cloud. Basic mythologems are linked with a cosmic catastrophe that has split the Milky Way and/or knocked down the Cosmic Tree. The Dark Brand that has occurred is being identified with the giant bird Emu, imitation monsters, and also the subincision wound and makes an image of the ambivalent power of the sacred that makes passages such as dry season/wet season in a cosmic dimension or initiation death/rebirth in an existential dimension more dynamic. | ||
