| 520 | |a The first part of the paper is an attempt to answer the following guestion: how does the image of God’s demand as perceived by people suffering from ecclesiodenic neurosis affect their behavior and their way of experiencing their religious life. This contains conclusions from research conducted on 192 adults, from 23 to 50 years old. The research led to establishment of five categories of beliefs concerning God’s demands, such as perfection, obedience, suffering, resignation and piety. The research proved that this image of God has an influence not only on the religious life of particular people. For those who treat their religious lives seriously (as do all people from the group under research) the image of a demanding God has major role to play, as it shapes their internal life and influences their behavior. This role can be defined as instructive. As it appears, the image of a demanding God is oftentimes stronger then what the person strives for and what he/she longs for. To sum up the statements of the respondents, three types of motivations to fulfill God’s demands can be distinguished: attempting to please God in order to protect oneself from His punishment, propitiating the "offended" God, and trying to earn God’s grace and blessing. The research also proved that knowing people’s individual way of experiencing religious life, and particularly the image of God and His demands, has a vital role to play in understanding people. | ||
