Summary: | The controversial Amazons’ myth has always been a matter of debate as to whether it is real or nothing more than a simple tale. Therefore, many scholars have tried to analyze the myths and their iconographic depictions, in an attempt to discover the truth behind the legend. Amazons have been described in many primary and secondary sources. Famous philosophers and historians of Antiquity have spread their legend and acknowledged them as “equals to men” providing valuable information for their daily life. These untamed females were warriors without hesitation or fear. They battled with the civilized and male-dominated ancient world, which wanted women restrained within the household, doing “women’s work” and child-raising. They defied patriarchy, contributing to changing the notion of women’s rights through the years, managing out of a feministic perspective to become one of the earliest and brightest examples of early feminism worldwide. |
