Claiming the Right to Peace and Religious Freedom as Women’s Rights: The Case of Women in Islam

| 520 | |a 본 연구는 이슬라모포비아(Islamophobia)의 대표적 양상으로서 이슬람은 반(反)여성적 종교라고 하는 인식에 주목하여 여성 인권과 종교의 매끄럽지 않은 관계를 살펴보고, 여성 인권으로서 평화권과 종교의 자유를 논할 방안을 제시한다. 여성 인권, 평화, 종교의 자유를 함께 논한 연구는 많지 않으며, 주로 여성 인권과 평화 혹은 종교와 평화로 나누어서 논했다. 그러나 여성 인권과 종교의 자유의 양립 가능성을 주장하는 여성이 늘면서 여성 인권으로서 평화권과 종교의 자유를 함께 논할 수 있는 공간이 마련되었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 먼저 여성 인권과 평화, 그리고 여성 인권과 종교의 자유에 대한 논의의 지형들을 각각 살펴본 후, 여성 인권으로서 평화권과 종교의 자유를 말하기 위해서는 종교로서 종교를 인정하고 또한 종교의 차이도 인정해야 한다고 제안한다. 여기에서 차이란 본질적 차이, 혹은 상대를 타자화하는 차이가 아니라, 서로 다른 생활 세계를 구성하는 여성들이 자신에게 익숙한 종교·문화의 언어로 여성 인권을 말하고 폭력으로부터 보호받기 위한 차이이다. 한국 사회가 갈수록 다문화 사회가 되어갈 것을 생각할 때 차이를 인정하는 가운데 공존하는 방법을 찾는 일은 중요한 과제가 될 것이며, 본 연구는 그 논의에 중요한 출발점이 될 수 있으리라 생각한다. | ||
| 520 | |a With the continuing representation of Islam as anti-women, the long standing vexed relation between women’s rights and religious freedom continues. Yet the need to reconcile them is stronger than ever, especially with regard to peace building. In this study, I explore how religious freedom and the right to peace can both be claimed as women’s rights. There has been scant scholarship that discuss both religious freedom and the right to peace as women’s rights. However, due to a growing number of women who claim the compatibility of women’s rights and religious freedom, a space has opened up for the much needed discussion. After reviewing the previous studies on women’s rights and peace, and women’s rights and religious freedom, I argue that in order to claim both the right to peace and religious freedom as women’s rights we need to acknowledge religion as religion and also admit that religions are, in fact, different. I explain how this can lead to a better tolerance or acceptance of the other. As Korean society becomes increasingly multicultural, it would be of crucial importance to seek ways in which we could live together while admitting our differences.
