A Study on Modern Thought in Kang Youwei’s Commentary on Analects of Confucius(論語注): Focusing on ‘Liberty, Equality and Fraternity’

| 520 | |a This study examines the explanatory system that Kang Youwei(康有爲, 1873∼1929) elaborated on liberty(liberté), equality(égalité), and fraternity(fraternité) which are key words of western modern thought. He tried to establish the origin of these three modern concepts in Eastern philosophy, to change the western perception of western thoughts to an eastern perspective through the Commentary on Analects of Confucius(論語注). The research is a review of Kang Yuwei’s acceptance and transformation of the representative ideas of western philosophy. In highlighting ‘Di(禘), a ceremony of sacrifices of ancient China’, Kang Youwei emphasized three things as follows. Firstly, all human beings(萬人) are free before Tian(天). Secondly, not only all human beings, but all things(萬物) are equal before Tian(天)’. Thirdly, to love all sentient being(衆生) from Tian(天) that is, fraternity which has the same meaning as Benevolence(仁). And he asserted that all of the grounds for these three modern ideas, which he accepted, originated from the Confucius school(孔門). This is exactly Kang Yuwei’s transformation of the Confucian Analects(論語), which was reinterpreted from the viewpoint of ‘Chinese Learning as Substance, Western Learning for Application(中體西用)’. In conclusion, Kang Yuwei reflected these three modern ideas in the Confucian Analects(論語) and transformed the fixed Western frame of perception into an oriental one, which brought it to life within the history of Chinese philosophy. Furthermore, it made Asians familiar with the unfamiliar concept of ‘liberty, equality, and fraternity’ and eventually recreated the contents and meaning of the Confucian Analects(論語) that lay on the horizon of the past with these modern concepts. | ||
