| 520 | |a 이 논문은 20세기 전반 제주에서 활동했던 천주교 선교사들의 제주 문화인식을 통해 종교와 지역 사회의 공존을 위한 함의를 찾아보려고 했다. 오리엔탈리즘과 선교 소명이 뒤섞여 있던 당시 선교사들은 제주 문화를 야만적인 것으로 보고, 천주교를 통해 그것을 문명화시키고자 하였다. 그러나 그것은 제주 도민들과의 극단적 충돌을 야기했다. ‘신축교안’(1901) 이후, 선교사들은 제주 문화를 배격하여 도민들과 충돌하기보다, 도민들의 목소리에 귀를 기울이기 시작했다. 특히 신축교안 배상금 이자를 도민들에게 돌려주고, ‘사립 신성여학교’를 통해 불어나는 교육 수요에 부응하면서, 선교사와 천주교회는 도민들로부터 ‘사회적 공신력’을 얻을 수 있었고, 제주 사회와 공존할 수 있는 가능성을 높였다. 이를 계기로 제주 생활에 안정을 찾은 선교사들은 제주 문화의 긍정적인 면을 바라볼 수 있게 되었다. 이 사례를 통해 자기 신앙과 다른 지역 문화를 존중하고 이해하는 것, 적어도 배격은 하지 않는 것이 지역 사회와 공존하기 위해 종교가 가져야 할 태도라는 점을 확인할 수 있다. 만약 신앙 때문에 지역 문화를 긍정적으로 바라보는 것이 어렵다면, 최소한 100년 전 선교사들처럼 지역 사회의 목소리에 귀를 기울이고, 공공선 증진에 기여함으로써 사회적 공신력을 높여야 한다. 그러다 보면 지역 사회를 이해할 수 있는 심적 여유를 찾을 수 있을 것이고, 지역 사회와 공존하면서도 자기 신앙을 지킬 수 있는 방법을 터득할 수 있을 것이기 때문이다. | ||
| 520 | |a This paper is aimed at providing implications for co-existence of religion and the local community. For this, I analyzed about the recognition of Jeju culture by Catholic missionaries who worked on Jeju island in the first half of the 20th century. Missionaries recognized Jeju culture as barbaric. It was by the civilizing mission as the Orientalism and the Mission calling. But it caused an extreme clash with Jeju residents. After the Sinchuk Roman Catholic Trouble in Jeju(1901), missionaries tried to win the hearts of the residents. In particular, they returned the interest on the compensation for the Trouble to residents. And they established a ‘private Shinseong girls’ school’ to carry out the education project. This allowed missionaries and the Jeju Catholic Church to get ‘social credibility’ from the residents, and raised the possibility of co-existence between them and Jeju society. As a result, missionaries found life’s stability in Jeju and began to take a positive view of Jeju culture. For this case, I confirmed that accepting the culture of local residents and contributing to common good are a key point for religion to coexist with the local community. If it is difficult to take a positive view of local culture because of self-belief, they have to listen to the voices of the community attentively at least like missionaries 100 years ago. Then they will be gradually able to understand the culture of the community and to learn how to coexist with it. | ||
