Dans cet article, j’argumenterai en faveur d’une interprétation de la lettre de Tite selon laquelle cette lettre est influencée par la mythologie crétoise sur Zeus et qu’il existe deux manières différentes d’analyser cela. La première, que l’on trouve chez Jérôme et Jean Chrysostome, consiste à proposer des lectures alternatives de Tite, telle que la lettre de Tite n’autorise pas le mélange de théologie chrétienne et de mythologie polythéiste. La seconde, dont les Actes de Tite témoignent, intègre des éléments de la mythologie crétoise sur Zeus dans la narration relative à la fondation de l’Église crétoise. Les deux, cependant, rendent compte d’une inquiétude à propos des relations entre Tite et la mythologie liée à Zeus.The letter to Titus claims to be written to the island of Crete, which was closely associated with Zeus in the Greco-Roman world. Further, Titus 1 :12 quotes a saying from Epimenides, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons," that was associated with the mythology of Zeus’s death on Crete. In this article, I will argue that the interpretation of the letter to Titus became enmeshed with Cretan Zeus mythology, and that there were two different ways of treating this enmeshment. The first - exemplified by Jerome and Chrysostom - was to propose alternate readings of Titus such that the letter to Titus does not authorize the admixture of Christian theology and pagan mythology. The second is exemplified by the Acts of Titus, which integrates elements from the Cretan Zeus mythology into the foundation narrative of the founding of the Cretan church. Both, however, exhibit anxiety over the relationship between Titus and Zeus mythology. | ||
