| 520 | |a During the 2008 excavation season at el-Bālūʿ Jordan, a basalt fragment of a volute capital was excavated on the east side of the large fortified building (Qaṣr) that is at the center of the Iron Age settlement. It was reused in the building of a Nabatean period altar. The volute fragment preserves the left side of the central triangle that is formed by two parallel lines and a double base line. Based on its size and features, the el-Bālūʿ fragmentsits squarely within the variant thus far found at other sites in Jordan including Ḫirbet el-Muḍēbīʿ, ʿĒn Sāra, and the Amman Citadel. Unlike the closest parallels from Ḫirbet el-Muḍēbīʿ and ʿĒn Sāra, the el-Bālūʿ fragment comes from a large, fortified structure at the center of a site with a substantial residential population. This volute fragments adds another exemplar to the corpus of Moabite volute capitals. | ||
