Contributors had been asked to reflect on a deceptively simple-sounding question: "How far can you go?" Our task was to suggest the kinds of engagement in Pentecostal practices that we considered appropriate for non-Christian scholars as they attempted to grasp-bodily, emotionally, behaviorally - the experience of worship. Was singing hymns okay, but not speaking in tongues? Should we feel free to raise our hands in exaltation, but scrupulously avoid placing them on the heads of believers who might be seeking spiritual blessings? By the close of the discussion, panelists had not reached full agreement on the finer points of participation, but we did appear to share a significant if unspoken assumption: that the project of becoming involved in, mirroring, and redescribing the ritual world of our interlocutors was ethically as well as academically justifiable.
