| 520 | |a This article analyses the religious practices of Messianic Judaism among the women in the Har Tzion community in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Messianic Judaism is a religious movement that has been on the rise globally, blending Jewish beliefs and practices with the belief that Jesus (Yeshua) is the Messiah. The women’s participation in this movement, however, has yet to be studied. It is therefore worth asking: what attracts women to this religious movement? How do they practise this religion? To what extent does the predominantly Christian context in Belo Horizonte facilitate or hinder their minority practices? Is Orthodox Judaism a reference point for the women’s local religious experience of Messianic Judaism, as in São Paulo? To answer these questions, a total of ten interviews were conducted—one with a rabbi and the remainder with women belonging to the Har Tzion Congregation, using the snowball technique. The findings revealed the various ways that individuals became congregants: through contact with publications, through visits by rabbis to evangelical churches, and, lastly, as a result of searching for Jewish ancestors. Regarding the roles enabled by the community, they were found to be diverse, although concentrated in the areas of caretaking and teaching, which are typically considered feminine activities. Orthodox Judaism, while respected, is not a strong reference in everyday practices at Har Tzion. On the other hand, members of evangelical religions that are strong in the area are involved in effective and prolific exchanges with the Har Tzion congregation. | ||
