Les spécialistes s’accordent sur le fait que cette ligne raconte comment une assemblée de shaddayin se joint à une déesse pour accomplir quelque action dans les cieux, mais l’identité de cette déesse est débattue autant que ce qu’elle est censée faire. Les propositions quant à son identité vont de Shagar à Shamash en passant par le Shéol personnifié. L’action effectuée consiste tantôt à briser les verrous célestes afin de provoquer un déluge, ou au contraire à ne pas les briser afin de provoquer une sécheresse, etc. Dans le présent article, nous proposons que cette ligne s’inspire d’un motif mésopotamien de «verrous célestes» dans lequel le dieu Shamash illumine le monde en défaisant ces verrous afin d’en ouvrir les portes, puis supprime la lumière en fermant les portes et en actionnant les verrous. En lien avec cet argument, nous proposons de traduire tpry «verrouiller» plutôt que «coudre». Nous offrons ainsi une nouvelle interprétation de la ligne comme une injonction à Shamash de «fermer les verrous du ciel» afin de plonger le monde dans l’obscurité et le chaos. | ||
| 520 | |a Combination I line 6 of the Deir ‘Alla Plaster Texts has long puzzled interpreters. Scholars are able to agree that this line recounts how an assembly of shaddayin enjoin a goddess to perform some action in the heavens, but they debate who this goddess is and what she is expected to do. Proposals for the identity of the goddess range from Shagar, to Shamash, to personified Sheol. Proposals for the action she is to perform include breaking the bolts of heaven to bring a flood, not breaking the bolts of heaven so as to cause drought, and sewing shut the heavens in order to bring drought, darkness, or some combination thereof. In this article, we argue that this line draws on a 'bolts of heaven' motif from Mesopotamian literature in which the deity Shamash shines light on the world by undoing heaven’s bolts in order to open its gates and removes light by closing the gates and locking the bolts. In connection with this argument, we suggest that the difficult word tpry should be translated 'fasten' rather than 'sew'. We thus offer a new interpretation of the line as an injunction to Shamash to 'fasten the bolts of heaven' in order to abandon the world to darkness and chaos. | ||
