Augustin, qui cite 13 fois ce verset dans son oeuvre, préfère la formulation de Jn 12,39-40 selon laquelle Dieu a causé cet endurcissement du coeur. Dieu n’a pas condamné les hommes incrédules, il s’est uniquement abstenu de les aider. Augustin souligne la pédagogie divine qui préfère attendre la résurrection du Christ pour que les yeux des Juifs s’ouvrent. Ceux-ci peuvent ensuite se convertir tout en restant dans l’humilité. Le peuple juif n’est cependant pas visé en tant que tel. Il n’est que l’exemple paradigmatique des hommes au coeur endurci qui n’ont pas été tirés de la massa perditionis, comme l’exprime la théologie augustinienne de la grâce. | ||

Augustine, who uses the verse 13 times in his works, prefers the formulation of Jn 12: 39-40 that God has caused this hardening of the heart. God did not condemn the non-believers, he only refrained from helping them. Augustine underlines the pedagogy of a God who is waiting for the resurrection of the Christ, so as Jews can open their eyes and convert with humility. Thus, the Jews are not targeted as such. It is but the paradigmatic example of men with hardened hearts who have not been drawn out of the massa perditionis, in accordance with the Augustinian theology of grace. | ||
