| Summary: | Antioch on the Orontes has been hit by numerous earthquakes throughout its history. Nearly twenty have been recorded in Antiquity. The first stage of the research is to draw up a list of these earthquakes, based on a critical analysis of existing studies. It is difficult to accurately assess their real demographic and material consequences, even in the few cases where sources provide figures. On the other hand, the texts clearly highlight the importance of these traumatic events in the construction of a historiographical discourse on the city and in the perception of its destiny and identity, to the point of changing its name from Antioch (the city of Antiochus, founded under the leadership of Zeus) to Theoupolis (the city of God). Antioche sur l'Oronte a été frappée tout au long de son histoire par de nombreux séismes. Près d'une vingtaine sont attestés dans l'Antiquité. La première étape de la recherche est d'en établir la liste à partir d'une analyse critique des travaux existants. Il est difficile d'évaluer précisément leurs conséquences démographiques et matérielles réelles, même dans les quelques cas où les sources fournissent des indications chiffrées. En revanche, les textes mettent clairement en évidence l'importance de ces événements traumatiques dans la construction d'un discours historiographique sur la ville et dans la perception de son destin et de son identité, jusqu'à susciter un changement de nom, d'Antioche (la ville d'Antiochos, fondée sous la conduite de Zeus) en Théoupolis (la ville de Dieu). |
