| Zusammenfassung: | What is the point of praying if God does not exist? Iris Murdoch answers: to see the Good and to be able to accomplish it. Indeed, although it presents itself as atheist, Iris Murdoch's philosophy (as well as her literature) gives the practice of prayer a preponderant place in the moral conduct of our lives. This article seeks to explain this seemingly paradoxical position by explaining its metaethical background: inscribed in the moral ontology, epistemology and psychology of Iris Murdoch, a practice of attention like that of prayer seems to be able to be effective, and to occasion the grace of a precious moral enlightenment. À quoi bon prier si Dieu n'existe pas ? Iris Murdoch répond : à voir le Bien et se rendre capable de l'accomplir. En effet, quoique se présentant comme athée, la philosophie d'Iris Murdoch (tout comme sa littérature) accorde à la pratique de la prière une place prépondérante dans la conduite morale de nos vies. Cet article veut rendre raison d'un tel positionnement apparemment paradoxal, en explicitant son arrière-plan métaéthique : inscrite dans l'ontologie, l'épistémologie et la psychologie morales d’Iris Murdoch, une pratique de l’attention comme celle de la prière semble effectivement pouvoir s'avérer efficace, et occasionner la grâce d'un précieux éclaircissement moral. |
