Mentre il responso sulla mancata conquista della piana di Tegea è riconducibile a una tradizione locale volta ad esaltare l’autoctonia degli Arcadi, la storia della traslazione delle ossa di Oreste celebra la potenza lacedemone. Gli Spartani sembrano chiamare in causa un glorioso passato mitico che permette loro di ergersi a guida dei popoli peloponnesiaci. Questa differenza coinvolge anche il piano ‘stilistico’: mentre il primo responso non presenta particolari riferimenti al mondo epico, il secondo (PW 33) si è rivelato ricchissimo di echi epici che sono presenti anche nel testo che segue il vaticinio. Quest’ultimo elemento induce a riflettere sull’impossibilità di separare, in certi casi, il responso dalla storia in cui esso è inserito. Questioni cultuali, politiche e identitarie si mescolano in questa vicenda in modo stimolante. | ||

While the response on the Tegean plain (PW 31) can be traced back to a local tradition that exalts the autochthony of the Arcadians, the story of the translation of the bones of Orestes celebrates the Lacedaemonian power. The Spartans call into question a glorious mythical past that allows them to stand as leaders of the Peloponnesian peoples: cultural, political and identity issues mix in a stimulating way. This difference also involves the 'stylistic' level: while the first response does not present particular references to the epic world, the second one (PW 33) is full of epic echoes that are also attested in the text that follows the prophecy. This last element leads us to reflect on the impossibility of separating, in certain cases, the response from the story in which it is inserted. | ||
