520 |a Yeak Rom (also known as Rô-băm) is a form of Khmer folk dance that incorporates characters that are derived from the Ramayana (or Reamker in Khmer), the well-known Sanskrit epic that dates back to the mid-first millennium BCE. The present study seeks to show that Yeak Rom has existed as a type of indispensable theatre art in Khmer rituals in the Mekong Delta and that its existence in Khmer society was transformed through time as an inevitable consequence of cultural interaction. To conduct this study, I selected an isolated village in Trà Vinh Province in southern Vietnam in order to evaluate how Khmer culture has transmitted the folk dance and stories of Reamker and inspired its creative performance. To achieve this research result, I used anthropological approaches to survey the Khmer community living in Ba Trạch village where ethnic Khmers make up 80% of the local population. As a result, this study shows that in spite of the multicultural background of the local society and the fact that recent overwhelming economic development has intensified many cultural changes seen in the community; the ritual nature of the Yeak Rom performance has ensured the continuation of traditional Khmer performing arts.
