Im Zentrum dieser Studie stehen Kriegspredigten sowie Andachtsschriften von evangelischen Pfarrern aus der sogenannten Oberrheinregion (dem Südwesten des Deutschen Reichs einschließlich des Elsass). Mit unterschiedlichen „Kriegsbildern“ bzw. Deutungen des „Großen Kriegs“ trugen diese Schriften zur politischen Propaganda zwischen 1914 und 1918 bei. Vor allem aber versuchten die Pfarrer durch eine theologische Deutung der Ereignisse (beispielsweise durch die Sakralisierung des Soldatentodes) die Geschehnisse zu interpretieren und ihnen Sinn zu geben. Andrea Hofmann wirft mit dieser Studie neue Perspektiven auf die Theologie des Ersten Weltkriegs und zeigt die Vielfalt der in Predigten und Andachtsschriften gezeichneten Kriegsbilder auf. | ||

The mass deaths at the front and the numerous deprivations that people had to endure in the field and at home repeatedly required a search for meaning and consolation. This study focuses on war sermons and devotional writings by Protestant pastors from the so-called Upper Rhine region (the southwest of the German Empire, including Alsace). With their diverse "images of war" and interpretations of the "Great War," these writings contributed to political propaganda between 1914 and 1918. Above all, however, the pastors attempted to interpret and make sense of the events through a theological interpretation (for example, by sacralizing the death of soldiers). With this study, Andrea Hofmann sheds new light on the theology of the First World War and demonstrates the diversity of images of war portrayed in sermons and devotional writings.
