520 |a How can religious educators and pastoral leaders help congregants reimagine what’s normal and possible in economics: in business, in government, and in their own household finances? There’s no lack of theological materials critiquing our present economy and proposing new ways to organise it. The problem is how to teach or engage this material, in the face of a dominant paradigm that makes alternatives seem far-fetched and impracticable. This article explores the dynamics of conversion in general, and of ‘economic conversion’ in particular. It identifies some key ways that the current economic paradigm dominates middle-class and professional thinking. It offers a basic framework and some practical applications for fostering economic conversion among the nonpoor. And it lays out a brief study of biblical debt cancellation that can prime the pump for transformative conversations about economics.
