Summary: | After the 11-9-2001 there has been a discussion about opponents, one that often uses apocalyptic terms like Antichrist. The roots of this term in 1 John present the opponent texts in a new perspective based on systems theory and constructivism. The opponents constitute a strategy of identity-making by delimitation. Their pragmatic function is central, so that they are less a means to blame others. This approach is transferred to political debate, in which opponent constructions related to Islam play an important role. The perspective here is to look at those generating the opponents in the context of their world views. But are opponents and delimitations necessary at all? Moreover, as to already existing delimitations, this article asks, how to handle them responsibly. The self-referential approach cannot avoid the emergence of opponents generally, but it strengthens sensitivity in communication, so that more peaceful realities can be created. Only dialogue can break the vicious circle. |
