|a Diese Dissertation untersucht die Rückkehr des Islam in den öffentlichen Raum in einer kleinen Stadt in Kirgisistan ein Jahrzehnt nach dem Zusammenbruch der UdSSR. Um das Jahr 2000 hat sich die Anzahl der Menschen in Bazaar-Korgon, welche Diskurse und Bräuche annehmen, die mit der schriftlichen Interpretation des Islams übereinstimmt, erheblich vergrößert und deren öffentliche Anwesenheit offensichtlich gemacht. Während das Handeln und die Diskurse dieses Teils der Bevölkerung (die neuen Frommen) ein apolitisches Wesen beinhalten, erheben sie politische Bedeutsamkeit weil sie die weit verbreitete (post-)sowjetische Vorstellungen in Frage stellen, was es bedeutet, ein Muslime zu sein. Die vorliegende Dissertation stellt dar, wann und warum Gemeinschaftsmitglieder sich, in bezug sowohl auf Diskurs und Handeln der neuen Frommen als auch zu deren Errichtung eines religiösen öffentlichen Raums, beschränken, es erlauben, oder dabei mitwirken. Schließlich wird behauptet, dass die politische Lesung des öffentlichen Islam die Entwicklung einer neuen Art von säkularer Subjektivität stimuliert.

|a This dissertation explores the return of Islam to public space in a small town in Kyrgyzstan a decade after the collapse of the USSR. Around the year 2000 the number of people in Bazaar-Korgon adopting discourses and practices consistent with scriptural interpretations of Islam had significantly increased and their public presences had become palpable. While the actions and discourses of this segment of the population (the newly pious) were apolitical in nature, they took on political significance because of the way they challenged widespread (post)Soviet notions of what it meant to be a Muslim. This dissertation shows when and why community members constrained, permitted, or cooperated with the discourses and actions of the newly pious–including in their constructions of religious public space. Finally, it argues that the political readings of public Islam stimulated the development of a new kind of secular subjectivity.
