Summary:According to the author, cases where the socio-religious transition from an indigenous folk religion to Islam can be traced back from the present to the end of the Middle Ages are not frequent in African history. The Arssi-Oromo of Southeastern Ethiopia represent one such case. After discussing the genesis and ethnic differentiation of the Arssi, the article gives a chronological outline of their Islamicization and analyses the factors favouring Islamicization. (DÜI-Sen)
