Description
Summary:The monkey-god Hanumän is one of the most widely revered deities throughout India. At first a messenger and faithful companion of Rama in Valmïki's Rämäyana, then with an increasingly dominant function in the later vernaculars of the epic, the monkey-god became more and more popular, becoming gradually an independent and almighty deity. For many of his worshippers he is on the same level as Visnu, Siva and other eminent deities of the Indian pantheon. This contribution presents historical aspects of the gradual development of Hanumän worship throughout the centuries, and an inquiry into its social and ideological background.
