Description
Summary:This article seeks to show that the scientific study of religion (Religionswissenschaft) can get results relevant to several disciplines and frames of cultural reference as long as it approaches its object of research by means of methods evolved in the sociology of knowledge and in semiotics. It states that the base of a so-called religious phenomenon is a social fact that is given religious relevance firstly by the semantic construction of corresponding religious meaning and secondly by symbolically marking this meaning. An example is taken from the field of Russian history of religion and ideas, namely the social type of the »Russian strannik«. The concept of »strannik« denotes a male person who has adopted a roaming way of life. Whether this way of life corresponds to what we associate with the type of a devout »pilgrim« or rather with the type of a socially deviant »tramp« derives largely from the context in which we come across this concept or social type.
