Description
Summary:Economic analysis of religion deals with the following questions: What are the factors determining faith and religious practices? What is the economic rationale for religious institutions and organizations? How do religious organizations interact in the religious market? In which way do religions and religious institutions contribute to the wealth of nations? In contrast to traditional sciences of religion the economics of religion accepts the assumption that both the faithful as well as the suppliers of religious programs are rational decionsmakers. This article shows how homo oeconomicus and homo religiosus can be reconciled with each other. It also provides an economic analysis of the origin, the structure and the behavior of religious organizations. The final part deals with the performance of religious markets and derives some proposals for public policy.
