| Summary: | The aim of this investigation is to offer al preliminary analysis of the manner in which ideas and interests are intertwined in Weber's comparative-historical sociology. On this behalf, a reconstruction of his analysis of the origins of »otherwordly « salvation religions is offered. A »dynamic autonomy« of ideas - originating in repeated cognitive confrontations with the »problem of suffering« as well as in changing conceptualizations of the supernatural realms - ist apparent. Moreover, the »Protestant Ethic«, which significantly influenced the origin of modern capitalism, must be understodd as in part arising out of this »dynamic« process, according to Weber. Nonetheless, his analysis unequivocally as well emphasizes that the unfolding of this »religious development« required, at every stage, a conducive constellation of economic, political, and rulership forces. |
