| Summary: | Taiwanese Buddhism underwent manifold changes during the 20th century. One of it consists in the persisting trend of a growing presence of women. By now two thirds of the 30.000 monks and nuns are female – a proportion unique not only in the history of Chinese Buddhism but also in Buddhism as such. Stereotypes of forced conversion for family or financial reasons and a want of culture are also put into questions by today’s nuns. Most of them fully devoted themselves to Buddhism only after the completion of their schooling. Especially in the field of charity and education as well as in the different Buddhist organisations nuns succeed in gaining noticeable influence thus changing aspects of the Buddhist teaching itself. This development is interacting with other Buddhist communities worldwide. |
