Description
Summary:Philosophers of the post-enlightenment era usually distinguished their enterprise from that of ›religion‹. However, at the same time many of them felt the need to reconstruct ›religion‹ in order to establish a philosophically acceptable, rational core of religion. This construct, than, ›religion‹, has been addressed by these either as a prehistory of philosophy, or as an inner strand of the philosophical enterprise. It can be observed that this complex relationship between philosophy and religion was driven by the motive to legitimize a purely ›philosophical‹ system. Yet, on the other hand, it can be observed – as, for example, in Hegel’s philosophy of religion – that the critique of religion seems to be only one moment of this process: the other moment being the motive to incorporate, prolonge or ›fulfill‹ the religious project. Hegel’s philosophical system can be taken as an example to show that this strand of philosophy, that tries to purify and to ›accomplish‹ the ›rational core of religion‹, should be seen (and analyzed) as an integral part of the European religious history.
