| Summary: | The end of the Cold War brought about apocalyptic imaginations of a new world order. The concept of a »Clash of Civilizations« brings back to life old apocalyptic visions of a global war of peoples. The article explores the connection between national identity and political apocalypticism in two case studies from Germany and the US. In a second step, the findings are discussed with regard to the rich history of apocalyptic thought on empires from late ancient times until today. The conclusion brings together some theoretical considerations how the relationship between the innovative potential of apocalyptic adventism and the preservative orientation of a given institutional order can be conceptualized in terms of a sociology of religion. |
