Summary:WHEN I WAS ELECTED PRESIDENT of the American Academy of Religion as the first in my field of bioethics to be so honored, I thought a great deal about why having my discipline would matter. I felt initial disciplinary duties, of course, to the field of bioethics, wanting to bring the intensity and the passion of a new discipline and all our tumultuous questions to the fore.
