Indeed, the history of Islamic studies within the American Academy of Religion (AAR), beginning in the early 1970s, can be read as a history of sometimes rather passionate debates about the place of religious normativity and prescription on one end of the spectrum, and detached as well as supposedly more critical scholarship on the other. This is a debate about method as well as about purpose.The contributions to this roundtable are another episode in this ongoing conversation.
