Brian K. Pennington provides a detailed summary of the responses to the controversy in the United States and India, noting a general absence of scholarly discussion of the significance of Section 295A. C. S. Adcock and Rupa Vishwanath address this lacuna in different ways. We learn from Adcock's paper that Section 295A was originally passed by the British in an effort to curb religious condemnation connected with proselytization.
