Description
Summary:An edition with English translation is provided of a hitherto unpublished Syriac martyrdom passion of Shabur. The text, which is incomplete, is from BL Add 7200. This account provides the Persian name of the persecutor, Gushnaq, not otherwise attested in the martyrological context. It also relates to a period of particular interest, the final years of King Yazdgird I and his relationship to the Christians. It places Shabur's martyrdom in 417 ce, which is earlier than most scholars believe that Yazdgird I began his persecution of Christians. A fragment of the Syriac Life of Mar Aba Catholicos appears in the same codex. Variants between this fragment and Bedjan's edition are listed.
